“Parents and families are the first and most important teachers.
If families teach a love of learning, it can make all the difference in the world to our children.” –Richard Riley

Reading
In reading we are finishing have finished Unit 7 on weather and tested (the results home this week 3/21). The letter/sounds and fluency words from unit 7 were; E, B, L, this, do, and, what.
We have moved into Unit 8 which focuses on plants. The letters/sounds and fluency words for unit 8 are; K, /ck/, U, little said, here, was. We look at the word families _ot, _op, _ick. This is a unit test taken as a whole group.
Unit 9 will begin around the end of April it focuses on Amazing creatures. The letters/sounds and fluency words are; G, W, V, X, she, he, has, look.

Fluency Words
I have been writing the fluency words that your child still needs to practice in their planners each week. We will begin to take “spelling tests” each week where they will now need to spell and write the words that they can read.

UNIT TEST
You should have all received a note about your child’s unit test scores this week. They are going up each time we are testing which shows that they are learning and understanding the material and also getting use to the format of the test. Like I mentioned in the note we have worked on test taking strategies and how to eliminate wrong answers based on what they do know. The tests are getting more difficult and requiring a higher level of skill. The next and last independent test will be unit 9.

Homework
We will soon be finishing up letters for homework and I will be sending home word families and blends to work on. Your child will need to come up with at least 6 words with the blend or the word family. When making word families and blend we encourage only “real” words they may list “non-sense” words on the back. If they would like to draw pictures of any of their words they are encouraged to do so but it is not required. I am looking for them to practice “making and breaking” new words by only changing a part.  Spelling Tests- from now until the end of the year there will be spelling words in the palnner each week.  They need to practice spelling those with their homework on Tuesday.  They will take a test each Friday.  The goal is to read and spell all fluency words by the end of the school year.

Math
We have finished topic 9 in math, which explored numbers 11-15. We counted, recognized and wrote those numbers. We practiced adding on from a number given as well as counting backwards. We have spent a lot of time making sure numbers go the right direction when they are written and the numbers are not transposed. We are working on topic 10 now, which is about measurement. We will explore measurement in terms of height, length, weight, volume, etc. Topic 11 explores numbers to 20.

Science
We have been studying wood for a few weeks. We have five kinds of wood that we look at and explore the properties of (redwood, basswood, pine, plywood & particle board). We have put water on them to see how they change and also put them in water to discover if they float or sink. The last activity we did the children figured out and graphed how many paper clips it took to sink each type of wood. We then talked about why it would be different for each kind of wood. We explored the term density in relation to the different kinds of wood. We will soon be working on changing the properties of wood by sanding, nailing, cutting, etc. There is a district assessment at the end of the unit where students are expected to name at least 4 kinds of wood and the properties.

Report Cards
Report cards will be going home on the 10th of April and I have begun to assess some of the skills that we have already completed. I will be sending home work samples if there is a concern in one area so that you are aware and can practice at home too. Something most of the class needs to work on it writing numbers 0-20 with no reversals. This is for an “exceeds” this quarter.
